Most indicators tell you direction. ADX tells you something more important: whether the direction has strength behind it. A trend without strength is a trap — price moves in one direction but without enough momentum to hit your target. ADX solves this by measuring how strongly the market is moving. Here’s how to use it for binary options.

What Is the ADX Indicator?

The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures trend strength on a scale of 0 to 100. It doesn’t tell you whether the trend is up or down — only how strong it is. Developed by J. Welles Wilder (who also created RSI), ADX is a lagging indicator that smooths out price movement to show you when the market has genuine directional force.

ADX values: Below 20 = weak trend / ranging market. 20-40 = trending market with moderate strength. 40+ = strong trend (often near exhaustion). Above 60 = extremely rare — usually during major news events.

ADX also includes two lines: +DI and -DI. When +DI is above -DI, the trend is up. When -DI is above +DI, the trend is down. The cross between these two lines is your directional signal, but only take trades when ADX is above 20 — that ensures the trend has enough strength to continue.

When to Use This Strategy

ConditionWorksAvoid
ADX rising above 20✅ Trend gaining strength — best entry zone❌ ADX falling = trend weakening, avoid entries
+DI / -DI crossover✅ Directional cross = clear entry signal❌ Cross with ADX below 20 = false signal
Strong intraday trends✅ ADX works best on trending forex pairs❌ Low-volatility crypto pairs give erratic ADX

Step-by-Step Trading Rules

Step 1: Set Up ADX(14)

Rule: Add ADX with period 14 to your 5-minute chart. Standard settings: ADX line, +DI line (green or blue), -DI line (red). Most platforms default to ADX(14) — no changes needed.

Step 2: Check ADX Level

Rule: Only take trades when ADX is above 20 and rising. ADX below 20 means the market is ranging — trend-following strategies will fail. ADX above 40 is possible but means the trend may be overextended — use caution.

Step 3: Use DI Cross for Direction

Rule: When +DI crosses above -DI and ADX is above 20 = CALL entry (bullish trend). When -DI crosses above +DI and ADX is above 20 = PUT entry (bearish trend). Enter at the close of the crossover candle.

Expiry: 15-20 minutes — ADX trends tend to hold for multiple candles once established.

Which Platforms Support This Strategy

ADX with +DI/-DI lines is available on most platforms, but the quality of the visualization matters for reading DI crossovers accurately. Here’s how the major platforms compare:

IQ Option — Best for ADX Visualization

IQ Option’s TradingView-powered charts show the ADX line, +DI, and -DI in three distinct colors that are easy to read at a glance. The multi-timeframe view is essential for ADX trading — check that ADX is rising on both 5-min and 15-min before entering. Set up ADX on IQ Option → (Ad)

Pocket Option — Budget Alternative

ADX(14) is available with standard +DI/-DI lines. The 5-minute chart with 15-minute expiry works well. The $5 minimum deposit makes it accessible, but the single-chart view makes multi-TF analysis harder. Trade ADX on Pocket Option → (Ad)

Real Trade Example

CALL on USD/CAD (5-min): ADX was at 22 and rising. +DI crossed above -DI at 1:30 PM. The cross was clean — +DI had been below -DI for 2 hours and the cross happened with conviction. ADX continued rising to 28 over the next 20 minutes. Entered CALL with 20-minute expiry. Price moved from 1.3650 to 1.3675 within 18 minutes. Payout: 86%.

Pros & Cons

✅ Pros❌ Cons
Filters out ranging markets effectivelyLagging indicator — signal comes after move starts
Gives you confidence in trend follow tradesUseless in sideways/consolidation markets
Reliable on 5-min and 15-min chartsDoesn’t show direction — needs +DI/-DI cross
Works across forex, indices, cryptoFalse signals when ADX is between 20-25

FAQ

What is the best ADX setting for binary options?

ADX(14) is the standard and works well for 5-minute charts. Some traders use ADX(7) for faster signals on lower timeframes, but this increases false signals. Start with ADX(14) — it’s the most reliable for short-term binary trades.

Can I use ADX alone without the DI lines?

Not for direction. ADX alone only tells you the trend strength, not the direction. You need the +DI and -DI lines to determine which way to trade. Some platforms hide the DI lines by default — make sure they’re visible in your indicator settings.

Verdict

ADX is the best indicator for knowing when to trade and when to sit out. Most beginner losses come from trading in ranging markets where no strategy works. ADX filters those conditions out automatically. Combined with the +DI/-DI crossover for direction, it gives you a complete trend-following system.
