You watch price touch the upper Bollinger Band and keep going higher. You’re convinced it’s going to reverse — but it doesn’t. Then, when you finally give up and trade the breakout, it reverses immediately. The Bollinger Bands bounce strategy solves this by giving you one simple rule: trade the first touch, not the tenth.

What Is the Bollinger Bands Bounce Strategy?

Bollinger Bands consist of three lines: a middle band (20-period SMA), an upper band, and a lower band. The upper and lower bands are set two standard deviations away from the middle band. When price touches the upper band, the asset is statistically overextended to the upside. When it touches the lower band, it’s overextended to the downside.

The bounce strategy is based on mean reversion — price tends to return to the middle band after an extreme move. When price touches the upper band, you look for a PUT. When it touches the lower band, you look for a CALL. The key difference from the squeeze strategy: you’re trading the bounce back to the middle, not the breakout beyond the bands.

When to Use This Strategy

ConditionWorksAvoid
Ranging market✅ Bounces are most reliable in ranges❌ Strong trends break through bands repeatedly
High volatility✅ Clear touches of both bands❌ Low volatility = bands are too narrow
London session✅ Best bounce frequency and reliability❌ News events cause band-walking

Step-by-Step Trading Rules

Step 1: Add Bollinger Bands

Rule: Add Bollinger Bands (20,2) to your 5-minute chart. Default settings: period 20, standard deviations 2, applied to close.

Setup: On Pocket Option, go to Indicators → Bollinger Bands. Set period to 20, deviations to 2, and choose “Close” as the source. The bands will appear automatically — blue lines with a shaded area between them.

Step 2: Identify the Trend

Rule: Check the 15-minute chart. Is the middle band sloping up or down? If the middle band angles up, the overall trend is bullish — favor CALL bounces off the lower band. If it angles down, favor PUT bounces off the upper band.

In a strong uptrend, price will touch the upper band more often and may “walk” the band without bouncing down. Only trade bounces against the trend if the middle band is flat (ranging market).

Step 3: Wait for a Band Touch

Rule: Wait for price to touch the upper or lower band. A “touch” means the candle’s wick or body reaches the band line. The first touch after price has been in the middle of the bands is the most reliable.

TouchFirst touch of upper band after a period in the middle — high-probability bounce setup
Price touches upper Bollinger Band — first touch after middle-band consolidation

Step 4: Wait for Confirmation

Rule: Don’t enter on the touch candle itself. Wait for the NEXT candle to close confirming the bounce. For a PUT (upper band touch): the next candle’s close should be lower than the touch candle’s close. For a CALL (lower band touch): the next candle’s close should be higher.

This confirmation step is what separates the Bollinger Bands bounce from guessing. Without it, you’ll enter during band-walking trends and lose consistently.

Step 5: Set Expiry and Enter

Rule: Enter immediately after the confirmation candle closes. For binary options: 10-15 minute expiry on a 5-minute chart. For forex: TP at the middle band, SL 5 pips beyond the band.

Real Trade Example

Bounce off Upper Band on EUR/USD (5-min chart)

EUR/USD had been trading in a 20-pip range for 2 hours. Price touched the upper Bollinger Band at 1.0875. The next candle closed at 1.0870 — lower than the touch candle. That was our confirmation. We entered a PUT with 15-minute expiry. Price dropped to 1.0855 in 12 minutes — payout 86%.

The key signal: the confirmation candle closed lower immediately after the band touch. If the confirmation candle had closed higher (continuing up), we would have skipped the trade — price was walking the band, not bouncing.

PUT +86%EUR/USD — upper band touch at 1.0875 → PUT entry → price hit 1.0855 (+86%)

Common Mistakes

  1. Trading every band touch. In a strong trend, price can touch the upper band 5-6 times in a row without bouncing. Only trade the first touch after a period of consolidation.
  2. Skipping confirmation. The touch candle alone is not enough. Wait for the next candle to confirm the bounce direction.
  3. Wrong expiry. 5-minute expiry is too short for a bounce to play out. Use 10-15 minutes minimum.
  4. Trading during news. Bollinger Bands widen drastically during news events. A touch during high impact news is noise, not a signal.
  5. Using BB(20,2) on low volatility pairs. Exotic forex pairs and low-cap crypto have erratic band behavior. Stick to EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and BTC/USD.

FAQ

What’s the difference between Bollinger Bands bounce and squeeze?

The bounce strategy trades mean reversion — price returning to the middle band after a touch. The squeeze strategy trades breakouts after the bands contract. They’re opposites: bounce profits from range, squeeze profits from breakout.

What is the best Bollinger Bands setting for bounce trading?

Default (20,2) works best for most pairs. Period 20 gives enough data points for meaningful standard deviation. Deviation 2 captures 95% of price movements — touches beyond 2 deviations are rare and powerful.

Can I trade Bollinger Bands bounce on 1-minute charts?

Not recommended. The bounce signal needs time to develop. On a 1-minute chart, band touches happen too frequently and most are noise. Stick to 5-minute and above.
