Most indicators show you one thing: trend, momentum, or volatility. Ichimoku Kinko Hyo shows you everything — trend direction, support and resistance, momentum, and future price zones — all on a single chart. It looks overwhelming at first, but once you learn the five components, it becomes the only indicator you’ll ever need.

What Is the Ichimoku Cloud?

Ichimoku Kinko Hyo translates to “one look equilibrium chart.” It was developed by Goichi Hosoda, a Japanese journalist, in the late 1930s and published in 1969 after 30 years of refinement. It’s not just an indicator — it’s a complete trading system.

The five components are:

  1. Tenkan-sen (Conversion Line): Fast line — average of 9-period high and low. Acts like a fast moving average.
  2. Kijun-sen (Base Line): Slow line — average of 26-period high and low. Acts like a slow moving average and confirmation line.
  3. Senkou Span A (Leading Span A): Average of Tenkan and Kijun, plotted 26 periods ahead. Forms one edge of the cloud.
  4. Senkou Span B (Leading Span B): Average of 52-period high and low, plotted 26 periods ahead. Forms the other edge of the cloud.
  5. Chikou Span (Lagging Span): Current closing price plotted 26 periods behind.

The cloud (Kumo) is the space between Senkou Span A and Senkou Span B. When A is above B, the cloud is green (bullish). When B is above A, the cloud is red (bearish). Price above the cloud = uptrend. Price below = downtrend. Price inside = ranging.

When to Use This Strategy

ConditionWorksAvoid
Trending market✅ Cloud shows trend direction instantly❌ Price inside cloud = no clear direction
Clear cloud color✅ Green cloud = bullish, red = bearish❌ Thin cloud = fragile trend
Crossovers at cloud edge✅ Tenkan/Kijun cross near cloud = strong❌ Crossover inside cloud = unreliable

Step-by-Step Trading Rules

Step 1: Add Ichimoku Cloud

Rule: Add Ichimoku Cloud (9, 26, 52) to your 5-minute chart. Default settings: Tenkan 9, Kijun 26, Senkou 52. Do NOT change these — they are the original settings honed over decades.

Setup: On Pocket Option, go to Indicators → Ichimoku Cloud. Default settings are already correct. You’ll see all five lines and the cloud appear.

Step 2: Determine Trend From Cloud Position

Rule: Price above the cloud = uptrend (only CALLs). Price below the cloud = downtrend (only PUTs). Price inside the cloud = ranging — skip trading.

This is the most powerful feature of Ichimoku. You don’t need to guess the trend — the cloud tells you instantly. Green cloud = bullish bias. Red cloud = bearish bias. Respect the cloud color.

Step 3: Wait for Tenkan/Kijun Crossover

Rule: Wait for the Tenkan-sen (fast line) to cross the Kijun-sen (slow line). For a CALL: Tenkan crosses above Kijun while price is above the cloud. For a PUT: Tenkan crosses below Kijun while price is below the cloud.

The crossover near the cloud edge is the most reliable. If the crossover happens far from the cloud, the trend may already be overextended.

Ichimoku crossover — Tenkan crosses above Kijun above the cloud, CALL entry signal

Step 4: Check Cloud Thickness

Rule: A thick cloud means strong support/resistance. A thin cloud means the level is fragile. Only trade crossovers near or at the cloud edge. If the cloud is paper-thin (less than 2-3 pips), skip the trade — the trend has no conviction.

Step 5: Set Expiry and Enter

Rule: Enter when the crossover candle closes. For binary options: 15-minute expiry on a 5-minute chart (Ichimoku works better with slightly longer expiries because the signals are more deliberate). For forex: TP at the next cloud edge, SL 5 pips beyond the crossover point.

Ichimoku signals are slower to develop than RSI or Stochastic signals — and that’s by design. The cloud filters out noise. When you get a clean signal (crossover + price above cloud + green cloud), it tends to be more reliable.

Real Trade Example

Ichimoku Crossover on USD/JPY (5-min chart)

USD/JPY had been trading above a green cloud for 2 hours. The Tenkan-sen crossed above the Kijun-sen at the cloud’s upper edge. Price was well above the cloud, cloud was thick and green — three confirmations. We entered a CALL with 15-minute expiry. USD/JPY rose 15 pips in 12 minutes — payout 88%.

What made this textbook: the crossover happened right at the cloud edge, the cloud was thick (about 5 pips wide), and the Tenkan was sloping up steeply — all signs of a strong uptrend.

Common Mistakes

  1. Trading inside the cloud. The cloud is a no-trade zone for binary options. Price inside the cloud means no clear trend. Wait for price to emerge on either side.
  2. Ignoring cloud thickness. A thin cloud offers weak support/resistance. A thick cloud is a strong level. Always check thickness before entering.
  3. Changing the default settings. Ichimoku was designed with (9, 26, 52) for a reason. Changing these breaks the system’s balance. Leave them alone.
  4. Using Ichimoku on 1-minute charts. The cloud needs enough data to be meaningful. Stick to 5-minute and above.
  5. Only looking at the cloud. The Tenkan/Kijun crossover is your entry trigger. The cloud is the trend filter. You need both for a valid signal.

FAQ

Is Ichimoku Cloud good for binary options beginners?

It has a steeper learning curve than RSI or MA crossover, but it’s worth mastering. Start with just the cloud color (green = bullish, red = bearish) and add the other components gradually.

What timeframe is best for Ichimoku Cloud?

5-minute is the sweet spot for binary options. The cloud has enough data to be meaningful, and the signals align well with 10-15 minute expiries. Avoid 1-minute charts.

Can I use Ichimoku on crypto pairs?

Yes. Ichimoku works well on BTC/USD and ETH/USD because these pairs trend strongly. Avoid low-cap crypto pairs that don’t trend cleanly.
